Reciprocal Correction with Black Bishop in Twomover Miniatures

Reciprocal correction acts as dual avoidance when some Black defender alights on focal points preventing what should be repeated mates.  As will be seen, the effects involve line-cuts, checks, pins, and arrival guards...  Examples are presented in the approximate order in which they were composed.

No.1 has a simple start, 1.Rd8! (zz) to prevent shut-off by 1…Bc8!  Now the defender must watch f5 and e8.  Hence, 1…B-SW  2.Qf5# or 1…B-SE  2.Qe8#.  Correction takes place on the line-cut 1…Be8  2.Qxe8# and pin 1…Bf5  2.Qxf5#.  A further defense is 1…Be6 suppressing both of these fates but leading to 2.Qh7#.

 There are useful tries in No.2.  1.Qh3? (2.Qb3, Qa3#) is spoiled by 1…Bf3! while 1.Qh5? (2.Qb5, Qa5#) gets stopped 1…Bd5!  1.Qh6! (zz) is sufficient to handle 1…B-NE/Bc6)  2.Q(x)c6# and 1…B-SE/Ba6)  2.Q(x)a6#.

 Black’s focal point moves plus a side move are used to defeat tries for No.3.  First comes 1.Qh4? (2.Rf6, Qxh5#) 1…Bg6!  Next, 1.h4? (2.Qg5#) 1…Bg4!  Then third, 1.Qg7? (2.Rf6#), fails to 1…e4!  1.h3! prevails against 1…B-NW/Bg4  2.Q(x)g4#, 1…B-SW/Bg6  2.Q(x)g6#, and 1…e4  2.Qf4#.

Two tries highlight No.4.  The abrupt 1.Qd3+? would snare 1…Ke7  2.Qd8#, but 1…Bd5!   The more careful 1.Qe4? (zz) has 1…c5  2.Qb7#, but 1…c6!  The victor is 1.Qe5! (zz)  with these dire consequences:  1…B-SW/Be8  2.Q(x)e8#, 1…B-SE/Be6  2.Q(x)e6#, 1…c6  2.Ra7#, and 1…c5  2.Qd6#.

Several faulty attempts spark No.5.  1.Qc2+? bags 1…Ka3  2.Qb3#, but 1…Kxa1!  1.Rb6? (zz) inserts 2.Qb2# when 1…Bd3 or 1…Ba4, but 1…Be2+!  1.Re5? would continue 2.Ra5# upon 1…Bd3 or 1…Ba6, but 1…Ba4!  1.Re3? (2.Ra3#) gets rejected 1…Bd3!  At length, 1.Re4! (zz)  wins.  Variations are 1…B-NE/Bc4  2.B(x)c4#, 1…B-NW/Ba4  2.R(x)a4#, and 1…Bxe2+  2.Rxe2#.

No.6 has a quixotic 1.Qf3+? negate 1…Bf4  2.Rb5#, but 1…Kg5! easily escapes.  1.Rb1? (zz) prepares 2.Rf1# for 1…B-SW, but 1…Bf4!  The right way is 1.Rb4! (zz) which duly collects 1…B-NE/Bf4  2.Q(x)f4# and 1…B-NW/Bd4  2.S(x)d4#.

Alone among this set, No.7 has the Black king possessing a flight square.  Not for long, as 1…Kc6 is under wraps via 2.Qe6#.  1.Qg4! (zz) tightens the screws to finish off 1…B-SE/Be4  2.Q(x)e4# and 1…B-SW/Bc4  2.Q(x)c4#.

No White queen is necessary for No.8.  1.Rd5? almost succeeds with 1…B-SW  2.Rd8#, but 1…Bc8!  1.Rc5! (zz) scores neatly enough with 1…B-SW/Bc8  2.R(x)c8# and 1…B-SE/Bc6  2.B(x)c6#.  It’s nice to have that extra 1…a5  2.Rxa5# gadget.

In No.9, an impulsive 1.Qc4+? arrests 1…Ka5  2.Bxc7#, but 1…Ka3! flies away.  1.Be7? (2.Qb4#) is obstructed 1…Bd6!  1.Rf1? (2.Ra1#) gets thwarted 1…b2!  The precise 1.Rf3! (zz) has answers for 1…B-SW/Bf4+  2.R(x)f4#, 1…B-SE/Ba5  2.Q(x)a5#, and 1…b2  2.Ra3#.

No.10 was arranged for the express purpose of locating that Black bishop extremely distant from the Black king.  An ugly eyesore, 1…Bf6+! was the price to pay.  1.Rd4? (zz) averts that resource but permits 1…Be7! instead.  Therefore, the humble 1.d4! (zz) serves as a blocker.   The finale is obvious:  1…B-SW/Bd8  2.R(x)d8# and 1…B-NW/Bc1+  2.R(x)c1#.

A quirky No.11 is the only item that utilizes a battery.  A tentative 1.Rd7? (zz) is brushed aside by 1…Bb8!  1.Rb5! (zz) acquires the target for 1…B-SE/Bb6  2.K(x)b6# and 1…B-NE/Bb8  2.R(x)b8#.

The straightforward No.12 has no preliminaries.  A direct 1.Qe3! (zz) seizes control over 1…B-NW/Bg3  2.Q(x)g3#, 1…B-SW/Bg5+  2.Q(x)g5#, 1…S~  2.Q(x)f3#, and 1…f4  2.Qe6#.
