Grigory Popov, an author of the theme: “On the SuperProblem site, in a column of record moremovers (main menu: Composition -> Tasks and Records -> Задачи на прямой мат), there are minimal moremovers with record length of solution. For material “King and Pawn” there is #122 with a Pawn on 7th rank. But in fact it is a White Queen. So, it would be logical to find out: what length of solution may be reached if the Pawn would stand quite far from a promotion square? To this end, the theme of this TT was proposed. Thanks to all participants of the tourney. Despite a “sporting spirit” of this TT, there are some quite artistic entries.
I invite all composers to work with minimal material (wK+wP) to try to beat the record #32 (which was reached in this TT) for column “Tasks and Records” on the SuperProblem site”.

Aleksey Oganesjan, director: “There are following changes in the final award compare to preliminary award:
- the problem No 8 (which took 6th place in preliminary award) was excluded in view of without unnecessary bPh7 this problem become a miniature, and miniatures are non-thematic according the conditions of TT-176;
- the problems with the same solution length (No 2 and 10 – #12; No 9, 15 and 18 – #11; No 1, 4 and 12 – #10) are placed in the right order with considering a less number of pieces;
- the problems No 17 and No 3 (which took 2nd and 3rd places in preliminary award) were excluded in view of strong anticipation – Velimirovic’s problem pdb/P1263434. Despite this problem have duals in non-author’s full length variations (in contradistinction to No 17 and No 3), such purity is not enough for originality. Also a primary criterion of TT-176 is a length of solution, and pdb/P1263434 surpasses No 17 and No 3 (not to mention about more successful key with a choice). Note that pdb/P1263434 is correct – in main, author’s variation there are no duals”.

The author of this problem, apart from his name, pointed out a mysterious inscription “Prof. H. meets Gustav” above a diagram.
This problem was really tested in Gustav program (both by author himself and by director) – it’s clear. But it is worth saying about “enigmatic” Prof. H. It is obvious that author is talking about Austrian Professor and chess composer Josef Halumbirek (1891-1968).
In the middle of the last century Josef was published some minimal moremovers with wQ and “clew” of Black pieces which hold a “stationary” wK. Among the longest moremovers in bases, there are #31 (pdb/P1193047) and #44 (pdb/P1193048), but they are both incorrect.
And the author of No 5 apparently had inspired by Halumbirek’s problems. To fulfill the condition of TT-176, Doris “replaced” wQ to wP on 5th rank!
Congratulations to German author with 1st participation in SuperProblem tourneys and with deserved victory!

2nd Place - No 6, Ralf Krätschmer (Germany) 8/8/8/7P/kp1p4/1ppp4/1prp4/nrbK4

1.h6 Kb5 2.h7 Kc4 3.h8Q Kd5 4.Qe8 Kd6 5.Qe4 Kd7 6.Qe5 Kc6 7.Qe6+ Kc7 8.Qd5 Kc8 9.Qd6 Kb7 10.Qc5 Ka8 11.Qb5 Ka7 12.Qd5 Kb8 13.Qc6 Ka7 14.Qc8 Kb6 15.Qd7 Kc5/Ka6 16.Qe6/Qc7 Kb5 17.Qd6 Ka5 18.Qd8+ Kb5 19.Qc7 Ka6 20.Qb8 Ka5 21.Qb7 Ka4 22.Qa6#
Here wQ maneuvers are somewhat similar to its in victorious No 5, but here a “clew” of Black pieces is more bulky. Also these problems have something else in common: at first bK breaks free like a lion, but after that the promoted wQ drives bK back into a “cage”.

3rd Place - No 13, Viktor Yuzyuk (Ukraine) k1K5/8/5p2/1Pp1pr2/p1pp1p2/bp6/8/8

1.b6 b2 2.b7+ Ka7 3.b8Q+ Ka6 4.Kc7 b1Q/R 5.Qxb1 Bb4 6.Qxf5 a3 7.Qc8+ Kb5 8.Qe8+ Ka5 9.Qa8+ Kb5 10.Qc6+ Ka5 11.Kb7 Bc3/Bd2/Be1 12.Qxc5+ Ka4 13.Qxc4+ Bb4 14.Qc2+ Ka5 15.Qc6 Bc5 16.Qxc5+ Ka4 17.Qc4+ Ka5 18.Kc6 ~ 19.Qb5#
The problem of Ukrainian composer (it is his 1st participation in SuperProblem tourneys too, as a winner Decker!) closes the top three winners. Maneuvers of wQ (good that not all are not entirely forced) with as many as 5 captures of Black pieces nevertheless allowed to extend a solution length to 19 moves. Probably it is the maximum which can be reached in this scheme which looks like a scheme in the example of the announcement of this TT.
