I received 20 problems from the tourney director in the anonymous form. The quality of the entries was above average considering the complexity of the theme and limited time. The weakening moves are better defined by many composers as ‘harmful effects’ which I find gives more clarity to the theme definition. I congratulate the authors for their interesting contributions.
There were a number of entries with just two defenses and changed mates including some with reciprocal change of black errors. Problem No 1 (Kh4-Kd5) with 4 defenses and double reciprocal change of harmful effects was unfortunately completely anticipated – yacpdb/491147.
In this award I gave preference to cyclic shift of harmful effects and also problems involving three thematic black defenses. Problem No 20 (Ke2-Kd4) does not strictly fall under the purview of the theme.
Finally I thank the Director Mr. Aleksey Oganesjan for his impeccable diagrams and clear-cut solutions accompanying them which made judging a pleasure.

Cyclic change of three harmful effects HE – 23 – 33, change harmful effects in tries

(Author.)

A very nicely constructed cyclic shift involving harmful effects of blocking, line opening and annihilation. The additional feature are the tries Sd7? and Sb3? by the key piece threaten e4 (the set mate after 1…Sd4) defeated by e1Q/R! The key 1.Se4! brings out a threat correction element introducing threat 2.Ra5 besides effecting the required thematic changes.

Z – 23 – 35. Cyclic change of Harmful Effects HE – 23 – 33

(Authors.)

Another lucid presentation of cyclic shift this time featuring three harmful effects of annihilation, blocking and unguard. The key opens two white lines and also a black line in this complex setting to effect the changes which include a transferred mate. The attractive pin mate in the set fxg4 after 1…Sxg4 is sadly missing in the post-key play. The construction is commendable.

Cyclic change of three black errors:
A = annihilation,
B = line opening for mating unit,
C = direct unguard;
all with changed 3 mates: Z--23--36.
(Author.)

White knight keys are known to produce complex changes in the two-mover but here an innocuous looking slight shift of WQ to f2 surprisingly produces the cycle effortlessly in an economical setting. Annihilation, unguard and line opening are the harmful effects shifted by the three thematic black Pawn defenses.

Change Z – 24 – 47, change function move, double reciprocal exchange harmful effects 2x HE – 22 – 22:
A) – blocking

C) – unguard
(Authors.)

Only entry showing four changes in harmful effects and mates including double reciprocal change from set ABCB to BABC post-key. The double threat detracts a little and the construction is heavy but a good achievement nevertheless.

Three good changes in this problem but the fourth one shown 1…gxh5 /gxf5 is non-thematic. There are three tries capturing BPg6 threatening Bf5, though unconnected with the theme, distinctly refuted add spice.

Three interesting changes from try to key bring each white rook alternately on to the scene. I particularly liked the changes after 1…Bxf5 and 1…dxc5.

Change of two mates (KL/MN) Z-22-24.
(Author.)

This is the only entry featuring four harmful effects with just two defenses, two after the try and two post-key with changed mates and a switchback after 1…g2.There are two more plausible tries apart from the thematic try Qc2? by the key-piece defeated by thematic defenses.

Bikos is a closely related to the theme of this tourney involving exchange of harmful effects of blocking and capture, on which tourneys were organized way back in 1948 and 1979 I learn. This Royal miniature fits in as the most economical Bikos which surprisingly escapes anticipation.
